Summary

Consultants working with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet worked to survey the Burgers Shakes Restaurant in 2026. These investigations documented the Burgers Shakes Restaurant, a c. 1957 dining establishment, at 219 E. New Circle Road in Lexington, Kentucky.  The structure is clad in brick veneer with a faux mansard roof.   At some point in its history, the walk-up restaurant was enclosed with seating installed in the expanded space (see historic photo below).  The building is surrounded by a surface parking lot.

Findings

Consultation with Kentucky Heritage Council staff determined that Burgers Shakes is Eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criterion A for its association with the growth and development of New Circle Road in Lexington during the 1950s.  Most of the historic commercial structures along this roadway have facades designed for the passing motorist rather than pedestrian traffic.  Consequently, signage was key to catching the eye like the large mid-century Burgers Shakes sign placed on top of this restaurant.

What's Cool?

This resource offers a glimpse of the effect of the burgeoning automobile culture during mid-century on the built environment.  For many of us, such restaurants hold a sense of nostalgia for a time that has passed.  Even though the 1950s era prices are long gone, the restaurant still offers an affordable meal from a simplified menu, cash only.
